What is YOUR Maternity Style?

First off, if you are expecting a baby, CONGRATS! Since you found out, a lot has started running through your mind. So much to do! Maybe getting pictures is one of those things that has come up for you. Of course I recommend them. It is such a unique time as a woman, and it is hard to say when the next opportunity will come. (and if you’re not expecting yet, it is always great to have an idea of what you like ahead of time!)

But speaking of so much to do, There are so many ways to capture this chapter—and that may be overwhelming! Many moms I speak to don’t really know where to start or what they want.

What we know for sure is your maternity photos should feel like you! So let’s explore some styles and see which may fit your personality best. (Maybe even discover another side of you that deserves some time in the spotlight, and make dreams come true.) When you get a photo shoot with me, we figure out your style together! And even get ready for your newborn session, thinking about how we will coordinate your maternity photos with your future newborn photos with sweet new baby.

We will look at 6 “styles” that my clients have loved:

  • Fashion
  • Elegant
  • Casual
  • Fun
  • Intimate
  • Family

As you read on, notice, there aren’t hard lines, and elements from one style blend into another or can be mixed intentionally to create the perfect tone for you.

Remember, there is no wrong answer! Just what you gravitate toward and makes you excited.

Fashion

What makes it “fashion?” Both the posing and the outfit are factors. You’ll see the posing look more vogue, vanity fair, renaissance. Ready for bold fancy and moody poses? This is for you!

  • High fashion gown
  • Chic jumpsuit
  • Bold prints
  • Fashion forward pants and suit jacket combo, no shirt
  • Leather
  • Statement accessories
  • Trench coat or duster
  • Monochrome
  • Creative posing!

All of the pictures we create together are big print worthy, but these often have extra wow factor making them especially fun to print.

The overall feel of these images can range from soft to bold and vibrant!

Elegant

Flowing gowns, soft fabrics, and stunning silhouettes—elegant maternity photos can be timeless and celebrate grace and beauty. Go for a fitted dress to show off your bump or a dreamy, ethereal look for a touch of magic.

Typically this style calls for a dress, but isn’t limited so much to a specific type. The scene and posing/mood play a big role in this look.

  • Flowy gown
  • Form fitting
  • Off shoulder
  • Turtleneck
  • Draped fabric
  • Silk
  • Sheer
  • Silk
  • Lace
  • Heels or barefoot

Casual

Who says maternity photos have to be all flowing gowns? Rock your favorite jeans and a tee, kick back, and let’s capture your modern or timeless casual style.

There are many ways to go with casual maternity looks. And NO the jeans do not have fit/zip! We leave them unzipped. But I just love jeans in photo shoots, the blue is gorgeous with skin tones.

Here are a few things you might wear for a casual look:

  • Button Down
  • Tshirt
  • Graphic Ts
  • Tank
  • PJs
  • Sports Bra
  • Socks
  • Denim jacket
  • Sports/school jacket
  • Sweater
  • Leggings
  • Casual dress
  • Sneakers
  • Minimal Jewelry
  • Barefoot!

Fun

Bold colors, fun themes, quirky props or locations —fun maternity photos are all about energy and personality! Wear something bright, mix patterns, add sneakers, or bring playful elements that align with your personality or hobbies that make you smile.

Some ideas:

  • Bright/Bold colors, whether that is the background or your outfit

  • Patterned outfits
  • Balloons
  • Icecream, candy, foods you crave

Intimate

Intimate, think maternity photos but giving boudoir. Soft, beautiful, elegant, fun, a little sexy. A must have for your private gallery to remember how awesome your bod was.
